Stargazing

“I know nothing with any certainty, but the sight of the stars makes me dream” by Vincent Van Gogh.

Welcome to my first blog post! Let me introduce myself, I’m Fiona Gowing, an Occupational Therapist (OT), wife to Simon, mother to two amazing kids: Ben & Ella and all round perpetual optimist. Having worked in healthcare for 17 years, my focus latterly has been on raising my children, now 8 & 6 yrs whilst running a before and after school childminding service from our family home.

I have always been an “ideas” person, with an analytical mind and a flair for practical problem solving – not much finds me stuck (well except for maybe looking at a blank piece of paper – like this one, when I first started to type!).

Growing up in a small mining village in Ayrshire, I had a passion for star gazing and entrepreneurial schemes. I remember when I was around 6 years old, and watching people sell daffodils around the doors. What a great idea, I thought – I could do that. I quickly got to work picking flowers from my neighbours gardens, arranging them into small bunches with an elastic band, and then knocking on their doors selling back to them!

My healthcare career has taken me across the globe, and I have had the privilege of travelling while working for large public sector organisations as well as small private businesses, meeting some amazing people and sharing fantastic experiences along the way.

Inspired by my children in 2014 I came up with an idea for a new product to help solve the problem of tidying up small fiddly toys from the floor.

Can I ask, do YOU dread the noise of a full box of Lego being tipped out onto the floor? I did! Now, I have the solution for you. I’ve designed Bitzbags, a new 2 in 1 versatile play to packaway storage solution. Made up of a square mat, with detachable bag, it’s the drawstring free design on the bag that makes my design different. Back then, I couldn’t find a quick play to packaway solution that did not have 5 foot long drawstring, so as a determined safety conscious parent and childcare worker (and did I mention qualified OT) I had to design something new. Something safer for children, something faster to tidy, something easier to use. That’s why I started what I’m doing now. Launching a business, designing a product, helping family life become that wee bit easier, and still gazing at the stars…

Thank you for reading this Blog. Over the next few months, I will be publishing some Guest Bloggers as part of our “How do you use your Bitzbag” campaign.  Can’t wait!
